Biotechnology, Development, and Neoliberalism

Abstract

This text analyzes the biotechnological developments that are radically modifying agriculture in our time and with it a whole set of productive, economic, social, cultural and public health practices, and even the forms of existence of communities and peoples. To this end, it examines how knowledge and techniques for the treatment of the living are organized on the basis of developments in molecular biology and its derivatives as a condition of possibility of biotechnology. Finally, in order to consider its social, economic and political projection, it proposes to interpret this modality of scientific-technological development as an expression of the current state of capitalism, which under neoliberal hegemony is consolidated as biotechnocapitalism.
